KLEIN, Jacob Theodor (1685–1759). Ova avium plurimarum. Leipzig: J.J. Kanter, 1766. Jacob Klein served as secretary of the Senate in Danzig and founded a botanical garden there. He collected natural-history objects to further his interest in taxonomy and was the first to use binomial nomenclature for molluscan classification. Klein believed that classification must be based on external characteristics and vigorously opposed the Linnean classification system because it did not adhere to this method. Klein’s emphasis on visible elements made the illustrations in his books particularly important. In this work intended to encompass the known world of birds’ eggs in one place, the hand-colored engravings showing subtle variations of birds’ eggs allowed comparisons between different specimens. With 323 fine original watercolour-plates by Lewin and descriptive text. Contemporary red straight-grained morocco by Staggemeir & Welcher with their ticket in first volume, sides with gilt palmettes borders and corner pieces, gilt decorated spines in 6 compartments with blue and green morocco labels, inner borders with gilt Greek key design, gilt edges. A magnificently bound copy of the first edition, one of sixty sets. "THE RAREST OF ALL ENGLISH BIRDBOOKS", entirely illustrated by original watercolours, and thus unique among bird books. According to Swainson, Lewin was 'the best zoological painter, and one of the most practical naturalists of his day'. He was patronised by the Dutchess of Portland and various eminent men of his day. Lewin's 60 copies, together nearly twenty thousand individual pictures, is considered 'the most amazing, enduring, and endearing one-man feat' in the entire field of English ornithology. The present superb work should not be confused with the second edition, with a slightly different title and which has the plates reduced, engraved and handcoloured. 52 of the plates show eggs and were probably made with his son's assistance all other plates show birds, brightly coloured with wash backgrounds.
